Abstract

This article of theoretical analysis proposes a union between the main theoretical and methodological lines that investigate the causal role of language on cognition: linguistic relativism and language as a cognitive tool. Initially, their respective methods and theoretical structures are established, and later the development of their possible relationships. The argument that is defended is that, despite their marked methodological differences, their epistemic coincidences turn out to be of greater importance for cognitive sciences, which can constitute a sufficiently solid paradigm that makes it possible to get closer and closer to the causal role of language in cognition. These epistemic affinities suggest that both lines are related within the so-called constitutive or cognitive theories of language and within the field of cognitive linguistics, where their empirical and theoretical implications reach greater fertility.
