The purpose of this study was to design and obtain evidence of reliability/precision and validity based on the content and internal structure of an instrument that explores the hopelessness identity style in older adults. Reliability/precision was obtained using Cronbach's alpha and McDonald's omega; internal structure validity was supported by exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). The former involved 294 participants, and the latter 313; a non-probabilistic, propositional sample was used. The instrument consisted of a Likert scale with five response options. The EFA results showed three factors: Absence of values, Fear of disintegration, and Fear of dependency. The CFA confirmed the EFA structure with acceptable scores. Reliability/precision indicated evaluations above 0.77. It is concluded that the instrument has sufficient evidence of validity and reliability/precision for use in research and exploration of dystonic identity. It is recommended to obtain other types of validity evidence and scales for grading and interpretation.
